2017 Medallion Challenge

The 2017 Choo Choo Quilters Medallion Challenge has the following requirements. Your quilt entry must:
  • have a center medallion block,
  • have at least 3 pieced borders—although the side, top and bottom borders do not have to be the same,
  • the quilt can be square or rectangular (or a circle if you're a patchwork engineer),
  • be quilted (hand, machine or both) and bound,
  • include a label.
You can use the center block and border designs that are presented at the guild meetings, or come up with your own. If you choose to have your quilt "quilted by another," this must be indicated when you submit your entry for the Challenge Reveal at the November guild meeting.

Center Block for Medallion Quilt
Note: You can use the block below for your center medallion block, or make one of your own design. Ideas for borders will be demonstrated at guild meetings. Handouts with instructions will be available at the meetings to guild members. Come to the guild meetings and be inspired!

Fabrics:
A fat quarter or a fat eighth for each color will be enough for the center block.

Flying geese units: Make two types of flying geese units.
To make the flying geese using the "no-waste" quick method, see our blog post from the 2016 Mystery Quilt Clue # 2. Use a 6-1/4" square for the goose fabric. Use four 3-3/8" squares for the sky corners.

Half square triangles: Make two types of half square triangles. Finished size: 2.5" (3" unfinished).

Cut 3" solid squares: 4 from Fabric A (neutral), 4 from Fabric B (dark), 4 from Fabric C (medium), and 8 from Fabric D (medium bright).

Assemble units: With the units you've made from above, make 4 corner units and 4 middle units as shown below.

Create the center medallion:
From Fabric C, cut 1 square: 5.5"
Lay out and sew together the corner units, middle units and 5.5" center square as shown below.
Finished size: 20" (20.5" unfinished)
