Fabric Envelope Bag

For the May program, Team Julie will be presenting the Envelope Bag

To make one you will need:

18" square for purse, 18" square for lining, and 18" square for batting.

Before the meeting: finish the edges by stitching around 3 sides, right sides together with batting on wrong side of lining.

Turn right side out and hand sew opening together.  Quilt as you like.

Trim, braid or binding may be used around outside edges if desired.

Bring this to the meeting to learn how to fold and make the little purse like the one pictured below.

Delectable Mountains possibilities

Becky shows variations on the block.
The topic of the program for the Choo Choo Quilters April guild meeting was another versatile quilt block: Delectable Mountains.

The program started with a delightful tale of lost settlers in the mountains of Oregon that were ultimately rescued. A Delectable Mountains quilt survived the ordeal and remained a family treasure and served as a reminder of the family's good fortune.

The cutting and construction of the Delectable Mountains quilt block is quite easy, "but if you are not paying attention," advised Becky, "your pieces could get jumbled." Not to worry, however, there are many variations you can make with the pieces of this wonderfully graphic and versatile quilt block. Shown here are a few examples.

Guild members got hands-on practice with the block's construction by using paper quilt blocks, scissors and glue. Pre-cut fabric squares were distributed to make Delectable Mountain quilt blocks for the  Cuddle Quilt Program.

Delectable Mountains Majesty

A look back in history gives us many wonderful quilt blocks and the stories surrounding them. At the April 16 meeting of the Choo Choo Quilters, we'll take a closer look at the Delectable Mountains block and show you how to use modern tools to make the assembly of this traditional quilt block a snap.

If you would like to make a "paper" sample block to learn the assembly process of the Delectable Mountains block, bring the following supplies to the meeting:
  • Paper scissors
  • glue stick or transparent tape (Scotch tape)
This program will also support the guild's Cuddle Quilt project. Pre-cut fabrics will be available for piecing Delectable Mountains blocks for this year's Cuddle Quilts.
