2010 Cuddle Quilt Quest

Goal surpassed: 73 quilts!
Goal: 51  Final Count: 73

What is the
Great Cuddle Quilt Quest?
We started talking about the Great Cuddle Quilt Quest back in March, with a goal of making 51 cuddle quilts by January 2011.  Well, here’s a little reminder of what it’s all about:  Until August members can bring in quilt blocks to donate to cuddle quilts, and each month a new pattern will be presented. Anyone can then take a group of six cuddle quilt blocks home and stitch a top, or even make the entire quilt.  If you enjoy making quilt tops but don't like quilting the whole thing, then you can bring the top back to the following meeting and let someone else take it home and quilt it.  If you don't like to bind it, a third person can bind it.  There is a point system for how much you contribute to the cuddle quilt program.  For each point you will get one chance to win a prize during a raffle.  The raffle will be held in January 2011 after all the cuddle quilts are submitted for this year.
POINT SYSTEM:  If you bring this, you will get this:
      1 block = 1 chance
1 quilt top from others’ blocks = 1 chance
Add a backing to a top and quilt it = 2 chances
      bind 1 quilt = 1 chance
You can bring more than one block to the meeting to get additional chances to win the raffle.  If you complete an entire cuddle quilt on your own, you will be entered in a separate drawing where you get one chance for each cuddle quilt.

Monthly block patterns:
August: Heart; red/white/pink
July: Greek Cross; black/white
June: Friendship Star; green or purple background
May: 9 patch; primary colors

All blocks are 12 inches (finished size)

The Heart Block
The Great Cuddle Quilt Quest block pattern for August is an applique heart with corner triangles. Color scheme: red, white and pink.

Directions:
Cut a 12.5" background square.
Cut four 4" smaller squares for corners. Draw on back or press a diagonal guideline on each small square.
For heart pattern:
Cut a 7" square from paper (or freezer paper). Fold paper in half. Draw half of a heart, making sure the drawn line touches the outside edges of the folded paper. Cut out heart. Unfold for pattern.

Use your favorite applique method to prepare fabric heart. Optically center the heart on the background square and applique it into place.

With right sides together, put four small squares on corners of background square (shown above on left). Sew on the diagonal guideline. Fold back on seam line to form corner triangles (right). Press. Trim excess fabric layers from back.
